World Refugee Day 2013

Various information and cultural activities will take place in the heart of Valletta, organized by the UNHCR Representation in Malta and the UNHCR Liaison Office to the European Asylum Support Office together with several NGOs and the Valletta Local Council. Support is also provided by a range of other entities, including the Armed Forces of Malta and the Civil Protection Department.

This year World Refugee Day is devoted to raise awareness about the impact of war on families. Each day, war and conflict force an average of 23,000 people to leave their homes. Families are torn apart: mothers, fathers and children forced to leave loved ones behind or separated in the chaos of war. Too many children find themselves unaccompanied and without support. Most remain in their regions of origin, only a fraction of the world's refugees make the dangerous way to Europe. Others perish in the attempt to reach safety.

In Malta, UNHCR and partners are organising information and cultural activities on World Refugee Day. With support from the Armed Forces of Malta, we will display a dinghy that was used by refugees to cross the Mediterranean Sea. A UNHCR emergency tent will illustrate the harsh life in a refugee camp. There will be possibilities to meet with refugees, enjoy live music and to taste different kinds of food! Activities for children will give also the little ones a chance to be acquainted with the lives of the displaced. UNHCR will present information materials on the situation of refugees in Malta, as well as on asylum issues in a European and global perspective.
